About The Okra Project

The Okra Project is a grassroots mutual aid organization that is addressing food insecurity in the Black trans community by providing culturally specific meals prepared by Black trans chefs. Founded in 2018 by Ianne Fields Stewart, the initiative has since grown into a national movement supporting thousands through meals, mental health services, grocery funds, and wellness programs. Under the leadership of Executive Director Gabrielle Inès Souza, the organization is guided by three key pillars: nourishment, safety, and wellness.
