Frequently Asked Questions
What is Decolonial Thoughts?
Decolonial Thoughts is a creative and critical platform exploring culture, power, memory, land, labor, rest, and liberation through decolonial perspectives. We publish work that challenges dominant systems of knowledge and uplifts voices, practices, and imaginaries rooted in collective care, justice, and alternative ways of being.
What types of work do you accept?
We welcome a wide range of creative and critical submissions, including:
Essays and personal reflections
Reported articles and investigative pieces
Cultural criticism and analysis
Visual and photo essays
Short films and documentaries
Illustrations and visual art
Experimental or hybrid storytelling formats
If your work engages with decolonial ideas, lived experience, land, labor, rest, identity, or collective futures, we want to see it.
Do I have to be an academic or professional writer/artist to submit?
Not at all. We value lived experience, community knowledge, and creative expression just as much as formal training. We welcome emerging, self-taught, and first-time contributors alongside established creators.
What themes are you especially interested in?
Our themes shift, but we are consistently drawn to work that questions colonial systems and imagines liberatory alternatives. This includes topics like rest and resistance, land and ancestry, migration, memory, embodiment, collective care, and creative practices as forms of survival and transformation.
How do I submit my work?
Please submit through our official submission form (linked on our website). The form will ask for basic information about you and your project, along with space to upload or link your work.
Can I submit work that has been published elsewhere?
In some cases, yes. Please clearly note where and when the piece was previously published. We review reprints on a case-by-case basis.
How can I be a part of Decolonial Thoughts beyond submitting work?
We’re always excited to connect with writers, artists, researchers, organizers, and collaborators. If you’d like to get involved, email us at info@decolonialthoughts.com
with a short introduction, your interests, and a portfolio or any relevant materials.
Do you pay contributors?
We are working toward sustainable compensation models. When funding is available for a specific issue or project, payment details will be clearly shared in the call for submissions.
Who retains the rights to published work?
Creators retain the rights to their work. By publishing with us, you grant Decolonial Thoughts permission to share the piece on our platforms with full credit to you.
I’m not sure if my idea fits. Should I still reach out?
Yes. If you’re unsure, send us a short pitch or description of your idea through the submission form or by email. We’re happy to let you know if it aligns with our editorial direction.
